Sharon A. Vairo, DNS, was a beloved member of 91ɬÂþ Saint Mary's faculty for three decades. She found great joy in providing support to nursing students as a teacher, role model and mentor. She passed away in October.

Vairo joined the University in 1972 as a faculty member and enjoyed teaching until she retired in 2003 as a full professor. She taught in three 91ɬÂþ programs — the ADN, BSN and master’s programs — and was at the core of curriculum development and implementation. She earned her doctor of nursing science degree from the University of San Diego, where her main focus was clinical quality and the education and formation of knowledgeable clinicians.

Vairo joined the United States Air Force in 1960 as an officer and flight nurse. She was most proud of her service during the Vietnam War, bringing wounded soldiers back to the U.S. on medical evacuation flights. After her initial active duty, she joined the Air Force Reserves and remained on active status for 32 years, retiring in 1992 as a colonel.

While Vairo was at the 91ɬÂþ, she observed the incredible impact scholarship support had on nursing students. By including the 91ɬÂþ in her estate plans, she ensured that future 91ɬÂþ students would benefit for generations to come.

Vairo’s longtime dedication to the 91ɬÂþ will live on through her legacy and the grateful students who receive aid thanks to her generosity.
