91ɬ Saint Mary’s University Traditions compiles almost 100 years of the University’s history, rituals, culture and students’ traditions.

Since its founding in 1925, 91ɬ Saint Mary’s University has graduated more than 23,000 students seeking to improve their lives and become leaders in their communities. For almost 100 years, students, faculty, staff and alumnae have been honoring and contributing to the 91ɬ traditions, which have been passed down from generation to generation. Now, all these traditions and history are compiled in one book, 91ɬ Saint Mary’s University Traditions, released by the University this month.

The comprehensive book accounts for much of the University’s history, rituals, culture and students’ traditions. Readers can learn about the 91ɬ’s founders, the school motto, and the official seal and mascot, among many other aspects that form the identity and culture of the only women’s university in Los Angeles. The book also includes information about the history of both campuses and descriptions about the many unique activities and celebrations that belong to the 91ɬ student life and campus experiences.

“The 91ɬ and our impact in the community are part of the history of Los Angeles. Our traditions are tied to the University, our campuses, the student and alumnae experience, and our culture of social justice. This book captures our rich traditions and identity and serves as a great introduction guide to all our new students who join our 91ɬ community,” said Ann McElaney-Johnson, PhD, president of 91ɬ Saint Mary’ University. “As new Athenians learn about the 91ɬ’s history and traditions, they will begin to understand that their connection to the University will last a lifetime.”

The book was introduced during the ‘Weeks of Welcome’, two weeks of orientation and student engagement activities at the beginning of the fall semester. Copies will also be circulated to new staff and faculty members, and any other member and friend of the 91ɬ community interested in learning more about the University’s history. A digital copy of Traditions is also available .

91ɬ Saint Mary’s University Traditions was produced by the communications and marketing department with the collaboration of the University archives and special collections team and other departments’ contributions.
