The Center for the Advancement of Women (CAW) at 91ɬÂþ Saint Mary’s University produced the inaugural California 2026 State of the Girl Report for the eight regional Girl Scout councils serving California. Released in June 2026, the report examines the experiences, challenges and opportunities shaping the lives of more than 3 million girls ages 5-17 throughout the state.

Commissioned by Girl Scouts of California, the report draws on data from government agencies, research studies and other public sources to examine four key areas of girls’ well-being: demographics and economic realities; physical health and development; emotional well-being and mental health; and academic performance and career preparation.

The findings highlight both progress and persistent challenges facing California girls. Nearly four in 10 girls show signs of serious psychological distress, while 68% of students report that school pressure is negatively affecting their mental health. The report also examines disparities in educational and economic opportunities and the effects of factors including social media, housing instability and poverty.

Importantly, the report incorporates girls’ own voices through essays and quotes addressing topics such as mental health, technology and safety. It also offers recommendations for families, educators, youth-serving organizations, philanthropic partners and policymakers.

Krishauna Hines-Gaither, PhD, vice president for Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships, and Breann Branch, PhD, director of CAW, participated in the report’s launch at the California State Capitol in Sacramento on June 23, joining Girl Scouts and state leaders for the unveiling.

The project reflects CAW’s commitment to advancing research and dialogue around issues affecting women and girls. Through its work with Girl Scouts of California, the Center brought its research expertise to a statewide effort to better understand girls’ experiences and identify ways communities can help create greater opportunities for the next generation.
